Dash Dive - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Getting Started
What is Dash Dive?
Dash Dive is a modern endless runner arcade game where you navigate a character through an endless series of obstacles. The game combines simple one-touch controls with deep gameplay mechanics including multiple difficulty modes, unlockable characters, course themes, and a global leaderboard system.
How do I play?
Desktop Controls:
- Click with your mouse
- Press SPACEBAR
- Press UP ARROW key
Mobile/Tablet Controls:
- Tap anywhere on the screen
Your character flies upward when you press/tap and falls when you release. The goal is to fly through the gaps between obstacles without touching them or the screen edges.
Is Dash Dive free to play?
Yes! Dash Dive is completely free to play. All characters, themes, and features can be unlocked through regular gameplay by earning coins. We may offer optional premium purchases in the future for players who want to support development and unlock content faster, but nothing is locked behind a paywall.
Do I need to create an account?
No account is required! You can start playing immediately. Your progress (scores, coins, unlocks) is automatically saved in your browser's local storage.
Gameplay Questions
How do I earn coins?
You earn 1 coin for every obstacle you successfully pass. Coins accumulate automatically as you play and are saved to your browser. The more you play and the higher you score, the more coins you'll earn.
What are coins used for?
Coins can be used for:
- Unlocking characters: Purchase new character designs in the shop
- Unlocking course themes: Transform the entire visual environment
- Continue feature: Spend 50 coins to resume from where you died (keeps your score intact)
What does the Continue feature do?
When you die, you have two options:
- Continue (50 coins or watch ad): Resume gameplay from exactly where you died with your current score intact. Great for extending high-scoring runs.
- Play Again (FREE): Start a completely new game with your score reset to 0.
The Continue feature is strategic - use it when you're having an exceptional run or close to beating your personal best!
What are the different game modes?
Dash Dive offers four difficulty modes, each with separate high scores and leaderboards:
Easy Mode:
- Slower obstacle speed
- Larger gaps between obstacles
- Perfect for beginners and coin farming
- Great for practicing and learning patterns
Normal Mode:
- Balanced speed and gap sizes
- The classic Dash Dive experience
- Recommended for most players
Hard Mode:
- Faster obstacle speed
- Smaller gaps
- Requires precision and pattern recognition
- For experienced players
Insane Mode:
- Extremely fast speed
- Minimal gaps
- Ultimate challenge for elite players
- Demands perfect timing and focus
What is Ghost Mode?
Ghost Mode shows a translucent replay of your best run in real-time while you play. It's both a learning tool and a competitive feature:
- Learn optimal paths from your best performances
- Race against yourself to beat your personal best
- Identify exactly where you can improve
- See your progress as you get better
Toggle Ghost Mode ON/OFF in the main menu before starting a game.
Why can't I see my ghost sometimes?
You'll only see a ghost if you've completed at least one run in that difficulty mode. The ghost shows your best (highest scoring) run for each mode separately.
Are the obstacles random?
Obstacles follow patterns that can be learned and memorized. While the exact sequence varies between games, certain "chunks" of obstacles repeat. Experienced players recognize these patterns and can plan multiple moves ahead.
How do I unlock new characters and themes?
Visit the shop from the main menu. You'll see:
- Characters: Different visual character designs
- Course Themes: Complete environmental transformations
Each item shows its coin cost. Click/tap to purchase with your earned coins. Some items may also have score milestone requirements.
Technical Questions
Where is my game data saved?
Your game progress (scores, coins, unlocks, preferences) is saved in your browser's local storage. This means:
- ✅ Your progress persists between sessions
- ✅ You don't need an account or internet connection to save progress
- ❌ Clearing browser data/cache deletes your progress
- ❌ Progress doesn't sync between different browsers or devices
- ❌ Using incognito/private mode won't save progress
I lost all my progress! What happened?
The most common reasons for lost progress:
Browser data was cleared: Clearing cookies, cache, or site data erases local storage
Different browser/device: Progress is stored per-browser, not synced across devices
Incognito/Private mode: These modes don't persist local storage after closing
Browser update: Rare, but sometimes browser updates can reset storage
Prevention Tips:
- Don't clear browser data for dash-dive.com
- Use the same browser and device for consistent progress
- Avoid incognito/private mode if you want progress saved
Does the game work offline?
The initial game load requires an internet connection, but once loaded, most gameplay works offline. However:
- Leaderboard submissions require internet connection
- Continue with ad (if available) requires internet connection
- Continue with coins works offline
What browsers are supported?
Dash Dive works on all modern browsers:
- ✅ Chrome/Chromium (recommended)
- ✅ Firefox
- ✅ Safari (desktop and iOS)
- ✅ Edge
- ✅ Opera
- ✅ Samsung Internet
- ⚠️ Internet Explorer (not supported)
Does it work on mobile?
Yes! Dash Dive is fully optimized for:
- iPhone and iPad (iOS)
- Android phones and tablets
- Touch controls work seamlessly
For the best mobile experience, add Dash Dive to your home screen for a full-screen app-like experience.
Why is the game laggy or choppy?
Performance issues can be caused by:
- Too many browser tabs open: Close unnecessary tabs
- Low device resources: Close other apps
- Old device/browser: Update your browser or try a different one
- Browser extensions: Some extensions can interfere with performance
Solutions:
- Clear browser cache
- Update to the latest browser version
- Disable unnecessary browser extensions
- Use Chrome or Firefox for best performance
- On mobile, ensure other apps aren't running in the background
Can I play on multiple devices?
Currently, progress is stored locally per-browser and doesn't sync between devices. Each device/browser maintains its own separate:
- High scores
- Coin balance
- Unlocked characters and themes
- Game preferences
We may implement cloud sync in the future to enable cross-device play.
Leaderboard Questions
How does the global leaderboard work?
The leaderboard tracks the highest scores achieved by players worldwide in each difficulty mode. When you achieve a new personal best, you can submit it to the leaderboard to see how you rank globally.
How do I submit my score to the leaderboard?
After achieving a new high score, you'll be prompted to submit it. Enter a username (or play anonymously) and your score will be added to the global rankings for that difficulty mode.
Can I change my leaderboard name?
Currently, each submission uses the name you provide at the time of submission. If you want to appear under a different name, simply enter a new name with your next high score submission.
Why isn't my score showing on the leaderboard?
Common reasons:
- Internet connection: Submissions require an active internet connection
- Not a high score: Only new personal bests can be submitted
- Server delay: Sometimes there's a brief delay in leaderboard updates
- Filters: Make sure you're viewing the correct difficulty mode leaderboard
Are there separate leaderboards for each mode?
Yes! Each difficulty mode (Easy, Normal, Hard, Insane) has its own independent leaderboard. You can compete for top rankings in multiple modes.
How often are leaderboards updated?
Leaderboards update in real-time. When you submit a score, it should appear immediately or within a few seconds (depending on server load and connection speed).
Shop and Unlockables
What can I buy in the shop?
Coin Store (earn coins through gameplay):
- Character designs: Visual character variations
- Course themes: Complete environmental transformations
Premium Shop (if implemented):
- Early access to new content
- Exclusive character designs
- Special themes
- Coin bundles
Do different characters have different abilities?
No. All characters have identical hitboxes, physics, and gameplay mechanics. Character selection is purely cosmetic - choose what you think looks cool! However, some players find certain characters easier to track visually.
Do course themes affect gameplay?
Course themes are purely visual transformations. They change the look and feel of the environment but don't affect:
- Obstacle patterns
- Game speed
- Difficulty
- Scoring
Choose themes based on your visual preferences!
How much do unlockables cost?
Prices vary by item:
- Characters: Typically 100-500 coins depending on rarity
- Themes: Typically 200-1000 coins
- Specific prices are shown in the shop
Some items may also have score milestone requirements (e.g., "Reach 100 score in Hard Mode").
Can I preview unlockables before buying?
Yes! In the shop, you can see previews of characters and themes before purchasing. This helps you decide which items you want to prioritize.
Are there limited-time items?
Currently, all items remain available permanently. We may introduce limited-time seasonal or special event items in future updates.
Strategy and Tips
I keep dying early. How do I improve?
For Beginners:
Start with Easy Mode to build muscle memory
Focus on consistency over high scores
Don't watch your character - look ahead at upcoming obstacles
Find a rhythm: short tap, pause, short tap, pause
Practice for 10-15 minutes daily rather than long marathon sessions
Common Beginner Mistakes:
- Looking at your character instead of ahead
- Panicking and button-mashing
- Tapping inconsistently (varying tap duration)
- Not using the full screen height
What's the best strategy for high scores?
Intermediate Strategy:
- Look 2-3 obstacles ahead
- Develop consistent tap timing
- Learn to recognize obstacle patterns
- Stay in the middle third of the screen when possible
- Use Ghost Mode to learn from your best runs
Advanced Strategy:
- Memorize common obstacle patterns
- Make minimal corrections (small taps)
- Think 4-5 obstacles ahead
- Know when to take high/low routes
- Stay calm and maintain rhythm
For detailed strategies, check out our full
Strategy Guide.
When should I use the Continue feature?
Good Times to Continue:
- ✅ You're within 10 points of your personal best
- ✅ You're having an exceptional run (well above your average)
- ✅ You're going for a leaderboard position
- ✅ You're close to unlocking a milestone-based item
Bad Times to Continue:
- ❌ You died very early in the run (first 10-20 obstacles)
- ❌ You're playing poorly overall that session
- ❌ You're frustrated or tilted
- ❌ You're saving coins for a specific unlock
What's the fastest way to earn coins?
Efficient Coin Farming:
Play the highest difficulty mode where you can consistently score 50+
For most players, Normal Mode offers the best coins-per-minute ratio
Focus on consistency rather than occasional high scores
Use Easy Mode if you're still learning (lower scores but less frustration)
Play multiple shorter sessions rather than one long marathon
Math Example:
- Scoring 30 consistently: 30 coins per game
- Scoring 100 once but dying at 10 the next 5 games: Average only 18 coins per game
- Consistency wins for coin farming!
Should I use Ghost Mode?
Benefits of Ghost Mode ON:
- Learn optimal paths from your best runs
- Competitive motivation to beat yourself
- Identify exactly where you make mistakes
- Visual guide for beginners
Benefits of Ghost Mode OFF:
- Less visual clutter
- Reduced distraction
- Find your own unique playstyle
- Can be less intimidating for casual play
Experiment with both and see what works for you! Many players toggle it on/off depending on their goals (practice vs. relaxation).
Account and Progress
Do I need to create an account?
No! Dash Dive works entirely without accounts. Your progress is automatically saved to your browser's local storage.
Can I transfer my progress to another device?
Currently, no. Progress is stored locally per-browser and doesn't sync. We're considering implementing cloud save/sync features in the future that would allow cross-device play.
How do I reset my progress?
To completely reset your Dash Dive progress:
Clear your browser's data for dash-dive.com specifically, or
Clear your browser cache and cookies entirely
Warning: This action is permanent and cannot be undone!
Can I have multiple profiles or save files?
Currently, Dash Dive supports one save file per browser. You could use different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) to maintain separate profiles, though this isn't officially supported.
Troubleshooting
The game won't load. What should I do?
Troubleshooting Steps:
Check your internet connection
Refresh the page (Ctrl+F5 or Cmd+Shift+R)
Clear browser cache and reload
Try a different browser
Disable browser extensions temporarily
Check if JavaScript is enabled
Try accessing from a different device
Controls aren't responding properly
Solutions:
- Ensure the game window has focus (click on it first)
- Try clicking directly on the game canvas
- On mobile, ensure you're tapping the game area, not UI elements
- Check that no other key/mouse handlers are interfering
- Try a different input method (keyboard vs. mouse on desktop)
My coins aren't saving
Common Causes:
- Playing in incognito/private mode
- Browser set to clear data on close
- Local storage disabled in browser settings
- Third-party cookie blockers interfering
Solutions:
- Use normal (non-private) browsing mode
- Check browser privacy settings
- Whitelist dash-dive.com in any ad/content blockers
The leaderboard isn't loading
Possible Issues:
- No internet connection
- Server maintenance (rare)
- Browser blocking the connection
Solutions:
- Check your internet connection
- Refresh the page
- Try again in a few minutes
- Check browser console for error messages
The game is running too fast or too slow
This shouldn't happen as the game uses frame-rate-independent timing. If you experience this:
- Close other resource-intensive tabs/apps
- Update your browser to the latest version
- Check that hardware acceleration is enabled
- Try a different browser
